Thinking of Investing in Property Abroad?

How much emotion is involved when making a business decision? It is surprising how little thought and planning some people put into property investment. Their decision is quite often motivated by emotion (particularly when buying abroad) rather than business sense. I have been a lawyer for over 30 years and I had seen many people making big mistakes when it comes to paying over money. Often they come to me to sort it out when it is all too late to do anything about it.
To make sure that you don't make any mistakes when it comes to investment, try to work out some very simple basic tests. First of all you need to ask yourself whether you in fact need to invest at all. If you have enough money, then why would you risk more to get more? All investments involve some risk and you should not rely on emotion to guide you.

If you want to invest money you must decide how much of your current income you're going to spend and how much you're going to save. Out of the money you are going to save you need to work out what proportion of that is going to be short-term, medium-term and long-term.  In each category you need to work out what is going to be low risk medium risk and high risk.
If you are using emotion to decide whether or not to buy a property, then you're probably not using any of the above tests at all but you are simply going along with the rosy picture painted for you by the selling agent! In all decisions you need to make regarding real estate, you need the advice and assistance of experts and people have done it before. If not you are simply relying on emotion and that could get you into big trouble in the long run.
